domesticity

december 2014 | Satellite art fair | miami

For Satellite Art Fair, InLiquid presents an exhibition of painting, collage, and fiber work by three women artists from Philadelphia. Constance Culpepper, Melissa Maddonni Haims and Donna Quinn are featured. The work has been curated by Rachel Zimmerman, Executive Director, and Ms. Haims.

"The common theme of our work is domesticity, personal space and perspective. Each one of us shares concepts of "home" as a collection of things, like furniture, wallpaper, tableware, that fill a vacant space in order to become a home. Whether the home is broken, being put back together, or overly full, the spaces in between these "things" is where we create our lives."

While each approaches the topic through a different technique, all three of these women create their work while attempting to “do it all”.

"The frustrated housewife is not a new concept. But modern domesticity is not our great grandmother’s domain.  As young and middle age married women we are expected to adhere to traditional norms of cook and housekeeper, of wife and child rearer while maintaining our careers, staying fit, eating organic, and posting images to Facebook and Instagram of a well curated, beautiful life.  Our houses should be clean; our children should be slightly wild but respectful, while taking images of their every move, applying the perfect filter to capture our perfect lives. How long can we be expected to sustain this frenetic pace before we finally declare that our houses are dirty, we haven't showered in days, we hate our children and would rather eat glass than have sex with our husbands?"
