During the Pandemic, Melissa was invited by the Work In Progress to display work in TART 2020, their annual Holiday Gallery and Shop. The exhibition was presented in-person for one day only in Boerum Hill, Brooklyn. The exhibit highlighted six women artists and included selections from two of Melissa’s most recent collections.
Melissa’s main body of work on display was a selection of her small-scale, abstract creations, collectively titled “Bound”. Composed of varying colors and textures, these works manage to look like a cohesive family of shapes, yet each remain completely unique.
Also included were three pieces from the project “Trophies”, which explore her fascination with saturation and the depth and breadth of a single color. By constructing these colors into playful awards reminiscent of high-school sports trophies, she commands your attention to the varying shades and hues of each piece.
“Here is a trophy. Everyone knows what a trophy is. Everyone knows why you get a trophy. Everyone who never won a trophy is keenly aware that they never won a trophy.” - M.M. Haims
